Our Mission

To increase knowledge and understanding of bioethics through promoting and fostering deliberations across the English-speaking Caribbean, as well as through international collaboration, thereby making a significant contribution to the overall development and implementation of bioethics in human and animal healthcare, research and policy-making.

BSEC Constitution

Our Background

BSEC was formally established in May 2006 by founding members from several Caribbean states. BSEC’s initial Annual Forum was a half day event held in Jamaica. It has grown to a full day event which continues to be held annually at hosting institutions in different Caribbean locations. Communication between BSEC members in distant and diverse locations is facilitated through five regional representatives:

  • North (Bermuda, Bahamas, Turks & Caicos, Chile, Cuba, USA, Virgin Islands (British & U.S. )
  • West (Belize, Cayman Islands & Jamaica)
  • Northeast (St. Kitts & Nevis, Montserrat, Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda)
  • Southeast (Dominica, St. Lucia, St. Vincent & The Grenadines, Barbados)
  • South (Grenada, Trinidad & Tobago, Guyana, Suriname)

BSEC’s Executive Committee facilitates recruitment of, and dialogue among, members about bioethical issues; advocates the engagement of bioethics in policy making within Caribbean territories; and aims to guide BSEC in ways that best achieve its mission.
